Since 1966, MPDC has been at the forefront of the physical redevelopment of Roxbury. We have a strong track record of producing affordable and high quality housing for low and moderate income families, in and around the Roxbury and the South End neighborhoods of Boston. Our housing serves over 3,000 residents and ranges from deeply subsidized units to market-rate units in mixed-income properties. Madison Park’s founding property – Madison Park Village – was started by community residents fighting urban renewal plans and successfully taking back their land to create a vibrant new community.
MPDC’s current development plans include affordable and mixed-income housing, commercial and retail spaces and historic preservation that contribute to the character and vitality of Dudley Square and Roxbury. MPDC’s home is Hibernian Hall, a very successful commercial property that also houses the Hibernian Hall arts and culture program.
MPDC believes that a diverse economic base is necessary for a vibrant community. Our newest endeavor in the heart of Dudley Square will create a new home along Melnea Cass Boulevard for Tropical Foods, a third-generation family owned/operated grocery store. This Dudley Square business anchor will continue to serve the Roxbury/South End neighborhoods as it has done for close to 40 years. Over the next few years, MPDC plans to convert the old Tropical Foods building into mixed-income housing and retail space, and build a new commercial building at the corner of Melnea Cass Boulevard and Washington Street.
MPDC values partnership and recognizes the benefit of working collaboratively with other organizations. Preservation of Affordable Housing (POAH), The Boston Housing Authority (BHA) and Madison Park Development Corporation (MPDC) are the initial partners to transform the Whittier Street public housing development and the surrounding area into a ”neighborhood of choice” – a transformation centered at the northern end of Boston’s Roxbury community. BHA’s Choice Neighborhood initiative for Whittier is the result of key housing, educational, City and community partners coming together to take the Roxbury Strategic Master Plan to the next level: replace Whittier Street public housing with vibrant new mixed-income housing concurrent with a strategic focus on developing educational opportunities for Whittier’s children and young adults.
Our plans come full-circle with the modernization of Madison Park Village. As the Village passes its 40th anniversary, the properties are being thoroughly modernized in phases. 140 townhouses were completed in 2013, and other properties will soon receive major improvements to secure their future as quality affordable housing.
